What is the Camelot Wheel?
The Camelot Wheel is a visual system that translates the 24 musical keys into a simple clock-face notation (1A–12A for minor, 1B–12B for major). Invented by Mark Davis for the Mixed In Key software, it lets DJs identify harmonically compatible tracks at a glance — no music theory required.
The 3 rules of harmonic mixing
- Perfect match — mix into the same key (e.g. 8A → 8A). The blend is invisible.
- Energy shift — move ±1 around the wheel while keeping the letter (8A → 7A or 9A). Same emotional color, more or less tension.
- Mood shift — swap the letter on the same number (8A ↔ 8B). The vibe changes from minor (darker) to major (brighter) or vice versa.
How to use this tool
- Click any key on the wheel to highlight all compatible keys.
- Glowing cyan rings = energy shifts. Magenta rings = mood shifts. Green ring = the same key.
- Anything dimmed will likely clash — avoid mixing into it.
FAQ
What does the A and B stand for?
A = minor keys (inner ring), B = major keys (outer ring). Same number = same root pitch, just a different scale.
Are diagonal mixes allowed?
Skipping a number and switching the letter at the same time (e.g. 8A → 9B) usually clashes. Stick to the three rules for clean transitions.
Do I have to mix in key?
No — many great mixes break the rules. But harmonic mixing is the safest way to guarantee a smooth blend, especially during long sustained breakdowns.
